Imphal, December 05:
IFC secretary Th Shantikumar today stated that a scheme to check occurrence of frequent flash flood in city areas will be taken up once the survey conducted in connection with the matter has been completed.
He said that the Advisor (R) to the Governor with a government team visited flooded areas of the city in June this year.
The survey was done at the initiative of the Advisor, he said.
He however did not give the exact date for starting the project but said that it could be started before the next monsoon if the survey report is submitted at the earliest.
Stating that encroachment and clogging of drainage led to the occurrence of frequent flash floods in the city areas, he said that encroached structures including shops and houses will be evicted once the project is implemented.
He also said that land acquisition will be one major problem.
Shantikumar said that Government will take up the scheme despite the acute financial crunch as city flood control has become a priority.
Besides this, the department has been taking up several flood control measures in association with local bodies and clubs since the last rainy season.
The activities include developing the embankments of the Imphal and Iril River at vulnerable points.
